What sort of a venture can an electrical engineer start? Is it worth doing MBA after a degree in EE?
Question:
Answer:
i think you should be in machine maintenance business such as motor rewindings, installation etc. A masters degee or a PhD in engineering is better because many customers will trust you and besides many successful businessmen engineers have no MBA degree
Im an EE, u can do anything the skills u learn from EE are wide. Im considering working with wireless networking such as bluetooth apps.
you can install a oxygen plant it sells- oxy for medical use for mountaineers etc. forget about engineering , we engineers earn peanuts compared to people in business and finance
EE's can rule the world. You have to think in an abstract way, analyze & solve problems. These are HUGE assets in any organization and mostly missing in corporate America.
After you've worked a bit you'll know if MBA is valuable, I don't think anyone should do an MBA right after undergrad. But you don't necessarily need any further education past BSc in order to succeed. Before investing in an MBA, take 2 or 3 community college accounting, finance & organizational behaviour courses.
Most of my Eng'g friends have other talents & skills. Many are also artists. It really doesn't matter, because if you can complete an EE degree you can do just about anything on earth.
The 3 things that many Eng'g students seem to lack are communication skills , business skills and teamwork/political skills. That's where many get stopped in corporate America, the liberal arts students out-talk and out-schmooze them and take full or partial credit for their ideas. So take as many business courses and maybe a foreign language (Spanish!) course while in college. An entrepreneurial course. Work in as many teams as your patience, GPA and time will allow. Get involved in student government.
Try to take a course on negotiations while in undergrad. It will last you a lifetime!
You don't seem to know exactly what kind of venture you want to start yet & who are we to tell you? So why not take a spin through corporate, maybe get that PE and figure it out as you go along.
Good luck!
PS (other than 2 summer jobs never did a bit of EE, but use problem solving skills every day)
