Is a Joint Degree JD/MBA program worth it?
Question:
1)Being able to know my family and not be in an office every second.
2)Salary - Does the accountant/attorney degree have a higher rate of pay that justifies the extra work and money?
3)Political standing - if you're an accountant/attorney, will that boost my standing professionally when I go to campaign later in my life for a political position?
Any responses from people who did an MBA/JD program are especially requested, but anyone who has any insights, please respond! Thanks!
Answer:
The short answer is that it depends on the industry/career path you are interested in. I have an LLB (U.K. equivalent to the JD in the U.S.) and an MBA. I am in banking..risk management analysis. I could do my job w/out the law degree but it makes me more marketable than your average analyst.
As for accounting -vs- law...accounting has more career opprtunities (whether in industry or consulting) and is one of the fields projected to have the highest levels of growth in coming years...in short, you may always have a job (or avenues to a job). I recommend that you do an M.S. in Accounting rather than JD unless you have your heart set on legal practise. In terms of your questions:
1).I work at least 65hrs per week. This is typical in finance/legal, whether in industry or consulting.
2). Starting salaries for accounting majors are $45K, while in legal, they are $35K..both have pretty good money potential but in legal you have to remain billable whereas in accounting (billable hours are only used in consulting)...
3)...both fields generate pretty good contacts, if you wish to leverage to pursue a political career.
Good luck!
