Environmental Internship question?

Question:
Alright. I am currently a college student finishing up my sophomore year in school persuing a dual major in Environmental Management and Global Buisness and Public Policy. What I hope to do with this degree is to help developing countries (like India, Bangladesh, China, etc) build their economies while still maintaining good environmental policy. It could possibly involve helping to write those policies or working with govenmental agencies like the WTO or the UN. My question is: where should I being looking for internships? Does anyone know of any companies that currently do this sort of work? If anyone does, are there any additional steps that I should look into taking to make this process easier? Thanks!

The basic purpose of the year-long Post Graduate Diploma Program in South Asian Development and Cooperation Studies is to educate and train students from different walks of life in issues of sustainable development and cooperation in South Asia. An important objective of the program is to go beyond nationalistic curricula and sensitize participants about problems of regional development. This will help to bring about mutual appreciation amongst neighboring countries and to develop a regional perspective of issues. The program will also provide a forum for promoting mutual respect and understanding and thus, set the stage for regional cooperation to promote peaceful coexistence.

They may offer internship for the subject you have mentioned (Environmental Management and Global Business and Public Policy)

Best of Luck and thanks for the generous intention to help us.
If you really want to get a feel for environmental pollution and the basics of what happens in the field, you should work for a drilling company as a sample logger. You will see how environmental releases occur, how they spread, how they impact the groundwater and soil.

You will get to know the real story of enviromental releases - not some hollywood crap that fails to relate to real life.

If you are unable to work in this field, then contact your state department of environmental quality and ask to work with a project manager. Forget about pay-you need the experience.

To answer your question though, ask consultants what you can do for a job. Some of them will have internships.

But, in my opinion, it is important to see up front and personal how the environment is affected by a release. No book junk. Real life. You will emerge knowing that there are lies on both sides of the issues. You will learn balance.
The best way to get a lot of environmental experience in a hurry is to work for a regulatory agency. That way you will be exposed to many different types of sources and industries every day.

My advice would be to work in the states for a few years then look for a company or agencies with overseas operations.
Battellle Memorial Institute- they offer internships
