What is the salary for an entry level position with the MBA or the JD degree?
Question:
Answer:
I depends on the type of lawyer or MBA and the location. Patent Lawyers in NYC start around $175K-$200K right now, but you are working 100 hour weeks. MBAs in IB take a few years to get there, but only work 80 hours/week. It all comes down to what you want to do. Having a job you hate is not worth the extra $$$
Over the long run, the MBA will earn you more, assuming you have any knack for business and leadership skills. I'm currently in a JD program, and law will put you comfortably into the upper middle class in most cases (the average lawyer starts about $70K/yr in a firm job and $45K/yr in gov't/public service).
Rather than asking which degree will earn you more, ask which you have better aptitude for and think you'll enjoy more for the long run. And keep in mind that you can use your JD to practice business, but you can't use your MBA to practice law (looking at long-term exit options). Also, JD's are much harder to get into than MBA programs, cost more money, and may require you to move to a city that has a law school. Plus you have to pass the bar when it's all over, which isn't an easy task in itself.
JD's start in the mid $30,00's - if they are working for the public defender or DA. If you're working at a top-billing firm - you'll probably start at about $90,000 (if you're in NYC, Chicago or LA)
