It depends on the requirements of the university - it may take only on extra quarter or semester depending on the university or college teaching schedule -
A double major is often two majors in the same field or college say accounting and management - both offered in a school of business or journalism and communication, a dual degree on the other hand are from two different programs or sets of qualifications - most popular are MD/JD, MD/MBA, JD/MBA - and also becoming popular is RN/Paralegal dual degrees
