Please Help Me, In Regards to My Education?

Question:
Have I really messed up my life? I received my BA degree in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and then went on to get my MBA degree from Capella University due to having to work full time and I wasn't able to re-locate. It has been almost 3 years since I started Capella and it didn't have such a bad reputation back then. I am currently working as an Underwriting Assistant at a small insurance company. My goal is to become an underwriter with a major company. My question is, did I screw up by attending Capella, and if so is there anything I can do to fix it? Should I go back to school? I'm looking for serious answers from people who have been in my situation before or who have gone to online schools and have received job offers. I have been working as an underwriting assistant for close to a year. In the next month or so I wanted to begin searching for a new position with a bigger company, but I am scared that I will be rejected due to my education choices. Any Advice?

Answer:
You COMPLETELY screwed up. You have wasted money and, more importantly, time. But it is never too late. Cut your loses and learn from your mistakes.

Instead of getting a generic MBA, look for (legit) schools that offer MS degrees in insurance or risk management. By now, I am sure that there are some real schools that offer the degree in part or fully online.

look at this web site http://www.aiutruth.com

& read this post. It is the most eloqent tirade that I have seen on the subject of pretend online schools

As someone who's responsible for hiring people at my fortune 100 company, I can honestly say that any resume sporting an on-line degree goes into the "circular file", regardless of their other qualifications.

I have my MBA from a traditional school, and shortly after I graduated and continually until this day, I have been solicited by the UoP to teach on-line business courses for them. While I have several years of work experience (which they didn't know), I was apparently qualified simply because they purchased a mailing list of graduates from my school and saw I had a degree. Not that PhD professors are better teachers, because some of mine really sucked as communicators, but asking people with limited work and educational experience to teach students shows a lack of concern about educational quality, and more about getting an instructor at a cheap price. If you don't believe me, check out the career section on the UoP site or other job boards and you'll see the low standards they set for educators. (see the ad below)

Getting a real degree tells me the applicant can make a long term commitment that requires sacrifice. On-line classes are the ultimate sign of laziness. With all real colleges offering part-time or evening classes, going the on-line route suggests you're looking for the easy way out. Most employers within reputable companies, including myself, won't take a chance.

Lastly, be prepared for the teasing, either publically, or more probably, behind your back, by your co-workers with real degrees
I understand completely how you feel. Especially when you have not been using your undergrad. My advice to you is, don't worry about the Capella University. Most companies just want to see that you have a Master's degree in something. It is not necessarily the school they are concerned with. The good thing is, you have an undergrad degree that is very versatile, an MBA, and you have experience working as an assistant underwriter. You can certainly go on to do underwriting with no problem.
My goal is to get a job with the government and I have chosen to attend an on-line university. While at a conference, I met some people who work for the government and have said that the school I have chosen is where a lot of people from the government are going as well. So...I don't feel you have anything to worry about because you already have an MBA and that is a step in the right direction.
Best of Luck!
Hi, the first thing that I want to say to you is that YOU DON'T MESS UP. As you know, Life is straggling and we have to fight everything for our life whether we are in wrong way or bad situation. As I know, You got BA from Pittsburgh Uni, that is good and not the useless. I think you haven't finished your MBA, Right? I found out that your goal is an underwriter. So Finish your MBA and You will get what you want. But you have to have Confidence and Faith, the most important things, in Life. Right now, Study and Work hard as much as you can and don't be scared by thinking your future before you do practically.
One more thing, everybody wants to have a job in Big Company including me. But Look at successful people, everyone doesn't start their job from big firm. The most important thing is that Do Your Best in the Right Moment and Never afraid to step forward and look for Great Opportunity.
Nobody can be Perfect even God. So, Have Faith. Your education choice is nothing for employer but your qualification is . If they ask you with it, Explain that after you got BA, you found out your real spirit for your life and you have decided to follow your real hobby and tell that your Psychology will help you in some points when dealing with people. Hey, But never tell them and show them that you regret for your education choices.Ok. Have Faith and Confidence. You will be Successful. Believe me.
I think you would like my Advice.
