Foreclosure or pre-foreclosure scams?

Question: Recently I heard on news that an individual came to a couple who were about to foreclose on their home and told them that he can help them get out before foreclosure took place, save their credit & at same time he make small profit.

Later on, after couple agreed, that individual took & pocked the equity out of couple's home, left the debt for the couple to pay, and disappeared. Or something to that affect.

How did this individual do this? What form did the individual make couple sign? Did the individual use a shortsale tactic by any chance? Cause I was thinking about enrolling in either Russ Whitney or Robert Allen's 3 day program & just occured to me that their training might teach people how to scam other people in distress. Or is their training different? Is short sale legitimate way to help people & at same time make a small profit?
