How can I get a foreclosure off of my credit report?
Question:
Answer:
You can try to dispute it. It is possible that it will come off of your credit report. Just write to each credit bureau that the trade line is reporting to. If you don't have any luck, you can always contact a professional. Just be careful when you do. There are a lot of scams out there.
You'd have to contact the original mortgage company, as well as the three credit bureaus and dispute the foreclosure. The mortgage company will obviously be able to prove that you were a co-signer for the loan originally, so you will have to show the credit bureaus that there was a court order relieving you of your responsibility for the loan.
It's kind of a wonder that the courts did not require your ex to refinance the loan into his name as the only borrower, because that would have solved the problem. But if you have the paperwork from the courts, then you can try to get the foreclosure off of your credit report.
The main problem is probably that the mortgage company was not made aware of the arrangements and reported everything against both of you, rather than just against your ex. It might take a few months to get the record removed, but it'll be worth it once it's gone.
In the meantime, you may want to try getting off of a reliance to credit, since these kinds of simple mistakes can lead to very negative consequences, as you're experiencing now. I don't know how difficult it would be in your situation, but it's always a good idea to be as financially self-sufficient as possible.
Take care, good luck.
