Can I get a lein on a home that is going under foreclosure for back taxes.?

Question:
I just started renting this home. My uncle is seriously ill and this home provides a perfect spot. I just received a notice of Show Just Cause Hearing for past taxes for the owner of the home. They hand delivered it and asked that i give it to the owners. This hearing takes place in March. I am unable to leave the home to find out any information at the clearks office. I need to find out if this house is up on payments also... I need some help here...

Answer:
I'm not a lawyer, but I've never heard of a circumstance wherein a renter got a lien on the property they were renting. The only circumstance where I can see grounds is if you have paid rent in advance past the point where the sale will take place.

No fun, but that's the way it is. The most you're going to get - if you're lucky - is the full length of the lease. Talk to a lawyer in your area about that.
You need to contact the County Tax Treasurer's office and ask them about the back taxes. Where I live in Illinois, back taxes are sold at tax sale, a deed to the property can be obtained by the tax buyer. Sounds to me like it's almost to that point. You need start with your treasurer's office and ask them who to contact. It's going to not only be the back taxes, but there will be interest and filing fees due. You can also contact the tax buyer to find out about purchasing the taxes from him. You can purchase the tax sales from the tax buyer, if they want, and have them transfer the sales to you. I'd talk to a lawyer to make sure you do everything your supposed to. Of course, the service they gave, giving the notice to you and not the owners doesn't sound like proper service to me since your not responsible for seeing the owner gets it. The seller would still have time to redeem the taxes even if you pay them. Get a lawyer. Good luck
