Debt consolidation companies don't fix your credit at all. They will get you out of debt, but they will usually HURT your credit for a loooong time.
I would suggest finding a credit repair company or even better...repair your own credit. It's free, legal and very effective!
Yes, a bank or credit union. Seriously. Talk to them. They are in it for the investment. The debt consolidation company is only in it for selling you the loan.
consumer credit counseling services(cccs) is a great company. Actually they make potential bankruptcy people use this company first to try to control their debt. I used them about 8 years ago and they were great and no funny business. They talk to your creditors and you pay one payment to them (cccs) and they allocate the money to all your creditors. Also cccs works with them to lower your interst rates and the amounts you owe.
It's not such a good idea to go with one of those debt consolidation companies because it'll ruin your credit. The best way to get out of those credit card debts is to concentrate on paying off one credit card at a time. If you have four of them you should pay the minimum amount due on three of them and pay a lot more on the fourth one. Keep doing this until your balance on that card is zero. Repeat this process until you are debt free and don't owe a penny to the credit card companies.

There are several to choose from. Too many to list here. Just make sure they are well-known and respected. Expect a higher interest rate if you have bad credit, lower if good - you get the deal.
