daveramsey.com and Financial Peace University will provide you with the tools you need to get out of debt and more importantly, to stay out of debt.
It has helped my wife and me tremendously. While it is not the easy path, it is the path that will lead you to a healthy financial plan.
The problem with debt relief companies and debt consolidation is that the root cause of your financial problems isn't being dealt with. If you go that route, you are more likely to end up in the exact same jam as you are in right now.
Rhiannon, check out the local branch of Consumer Credit Counseling Service in your city or area. They are non-profit entities designed solely to help people with debt management and budgeting. You will have to pay a fee to them, but it should be a flat fee and will involve a "work out" to attempt to reduce your debt, interest rate and/or payments. There are other non-profits out there that do the same thing, but frankly I trust CCCS more than the rest of them.
I would recommend Dave Ramsey's program also. If you go to his website, you can even find a local financial counselor that will help get you on a plan to pay down your debt and get you back on your feet. They do charge a fee for their service, but it's so worth it. This is much better and cheaper than a debt relief company that will buy your loans out and then you have to pay them. I'm actually considering becoming a counselor in his program and I know the counselors have a true passion for helping people get out of debt. They will NOT rip you off like some of the debt relief companies do.
Try the Fannie Mae society. They specialize in helping individuals and families in debt crisis.
