Do I have to hire and pay a lawyer to expunge my criminal record or can I do it myself?

Question: I live in Orange County California and I have already found my past cases online. I have also downloaded the proper forms to file and researched the self help/ do it yourself instructions relating to my situation. So I'm wondering if the lawyer that quoted me an estimated cost of $2000 for him to handle this task would be more effective or can I just do it myself and save my money. It seems like his costs are higher than the average expungement lawyers but he is a friend of the family so they are trying to encourage me to hire him.
