Who else thinks incompetent criminal lawyers cause their clients more harm than good?

well i think it depends on what happens, some are good, some are bad. it just depends. but, i'd say yes.
Seriously, yes. And I've seen some frighteningly bad ones even with my limited time in the criminal defense arena.
I think all incompetent attorneys need to be removed -- as a profession, they do us all more harm than good.
well yes of coarse they cause more harm then good. an incompetent doctor gives bad health care. an incompetent teacher hurts our children. incompetent is bad in every field.
Incompetent attorneys by definition do not help their clients. How much they hurt their clients depends on the facts of the case. I have seen some cases where even the best attorney could not have made much difference.
I have seen some pretty bad ones. But every profession has them.
I would never just go out and hire the first lawyer I came across. I would always check them out before hiring one, its not like your looking for someone to clean your pool. I work with a lot of them though and already know who I would go to if I needed one.

Let’s just suppose than somebody is facing a serious criminal charge and their appointed public defender or “paid attorney” is competent. The state has a substantially larger budget and therefore can mount an extremely powerful case against the defendant. On the other hand, the paid attorney and or public defender has extremely limited resources and cannot mount a defense for the accused anywhere near what the state can. In my scenario, this is a best case example. Now throw in the mix an attorney that isn’t very bright, doesn’t care, has a huge caseload, or all of the aforementioned points and it’s no wonder why our jails are so full of poor people.
It's about time we revamp our criminal justice system. We really need to stop making so many things criminal!
