Perhaps the defense lawyer is more of a general practice attorney that works on many different kinds of cases. Or, perhaps he (or your husband) is an idiot.
Worst case scenario - he's trying to save the ability to claim inadequate representation if you kick him around in court.

Most likely he is a friend, or a friend of a friend. Otherwise, it wouldnt make much sense, unless the lawyer is going into a different type of representation.
to defend himself better then the husband could ever. maybe, the husband isn't good in defending himself, maybe he has a weak capability of putting words together, who knows!!
