If you live in the USA:
1. Take the LSAT exam;

2. make sure you have atleast a B average GPA;

3. research law schools and apply;

4. graduate law school and hope you are still sane.

5. take and pass the Bar exam, the worst exam on planet earth.

Then you can work on criminal cases once you pass the Bar.

What they earn depends on whether you work for a firm, or government. It ranges widely.
A grade one spelling course would be a good start for you.
You must first go to law school, graduate, take your state's bar exam. Most attorneys get into criminal law by first getting a job with their local prosecuting attorney's office or public defender's office.
