How much money do criminal law lawyers make in a year?
Question:
Answer:
It depends.
There are criminal defense attorneys who are in private practice who make very, very good money (think Johnnie Cochran, who defended O.J. Simpson). Most private practice criminal defense attorneys spend a lot of time on things like DWI's and assault cases, though, that aren't very lucrative unless your client is a professional athlete.
There are criminal defense attorneys who are public defenders, and who are therefore employees of the state/county/city where they work. They generally make in the range of $30 - $90K per year, depending on where they're working. Most fall more toward the low end of that range.
There are prosecutors (states attorneys, city attorneys, county attorneys), who are also public employees, so their income falls into about the same ranges, possibly a bit higher.
More than they deserve.
Depends how much of a criminal they are, and if they get caught or not.
Well, just think about this... if you are about to go to jail... wouldn´t you pay as much as you can for been represented by a lawyer good enough to avoid it, or at least to reduce that punishment? Criminal lawyers know that... their earnings is proportional to the anguish of their clients.
