The downside to diet pills is that they aren't "harmless". Major body systems are affected including your brain, liver and central nervous system (same with cold meds).
It's also a false crutch. Let's say you take the pills, lose 30-50 lbs. Then what? You can't take them forever and if you haven't learned habits to pick better foods (and skip bad foods), then you're going to regain the weight you lost.
If you think you'll have the willpower to make better choices after diet pills, then try it now without diet pills and see. If you can't do it now, you won't be able to do it then.
There is one drug that interferes with fat absorption. If you don't get short on fat-soluble vitamins and don't mind some really smelly "anal leakage" it can be a thought. The others are amphetamines or amphetamine-like drugs. They have significant risks and offer no long-term benefit. The Tennessee medical board had a long-standing policy of not allowing their use, until the legislature forced them to allow Phen-fen, which of course was a disaster. In purely pharmacologic terms, there's little difference between these pills and just scoring some crystal meth from your local druggie.
