What's the difference between the FDA and the AMA when it comes to approving diet pills?

Question:
Heard a recent news report that there's a diet pill that has been approved by the FDA for the first time. How have previous diet pills made it to store shelves w/o FDA approval??

Answer:
FDA approves "drugs" ie preparations which have a medical use. Most diet pills are not considered to be drugs, they are "dietary supplements".
