Is taking calcium in pill form as good as taking it from diet?

Question:

Answer:
Food source is the best - calcium is not easily absorbed - from tablets - you need Vitamin D - with it
Vitamin D regulates the calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood by promoting their absorption from food in the intestines, and by promoting re-absorption of calcium in the kidneys.
It promotes bone formation and mineralization and is essential in the development of an intact and strong skeleton.
It inhibits parathyroid hormone secretion from the parathyroid gland.
Vitamin D affects the immune system by promoting immunosuppression, phagocytosis, and anti-tumor activity.

Most of the food are fortified with Vit D - if u are not exposed to Sunlight much

Food which help absorption of calcium food rich in calcium
Ragi a millet
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/finger_mill...

Milk with the fat in it as some studies say that with out the fat the calcium is not absorbed ( sorry don't have that link to prove)

Spinach and other leafy vegetables are good source of calcium - Drumstick and it's leafs are also good source

I will strongly will say that the food sources is the best be it be iron deficiency or other vitamin's or be it calcium - food if the best source ( provided you have no malabsorbtion syndromes )
its all depend on your age and deficiency otherwise food source is good way to go. Spartan
your body doesnt absorb as much of it from the pills so its better to get it from your food but if you dont eat right the pills are better than nothing
I take Citracal - it's calcium citrate and very absorbable. I take one in the a.m. and one in the evening, bc the body tends to only absorb about 500 or 600 mg at a time.

I also like Stoneyfield Organic Yogurt.
Yes its the same i take a calcium i take one to .. This is just souppost to be easyer with the pill instead of finding it in foods....but yes its the same and good for you too....keep it up and you will have strong bones......!!!!
Not really much evidence for this either way. Some small studies with vitamins that suggest they are a lot better taken naturally, and iron taken as 'haem' from liver or red meat is much better absorbed that inorganic iron as iron tablets, I an not aware of any studies that have been done to compare calcium sources.

Remember you also need the accompanying vitamin D, unless you are exposed to lots of sunlight regularly, in which case you will synthesise it.
