In the early twentieth century thyroxine was included in diet pills but since then has been banned. I am trying to figure out what the reasoning was for including it in the first place other than enhancing as persons metabolism.

The whole point was that it did enhance metabolism - thereby causing the patient to burn off more calories
that's basically it, it increases metabolism which makes you burn more calories. thyroid hormone controls a lot of other things in the body too which causes lots of side effects, hence no longer using it for weightloss
It is illegal to use thyroxine as a diet pill. It increases the metabolism, and nothing else.
You can kill yourself with it !
