Are there any diet pills that actually work?
Question:
Answer:
It depends on what you mean by work. Diet pills fall into three categories, appetite supressants, metabolic enhancers, and intake blockers. What's the difference?
1.) Appetite supressants - these make you feel less hungry or not hungry at all. While using them can eliminate snacking, they can also lead to starvation dieting. Some people forget to eat, because they do not feel hungry. When combined with a low fat low calorie diet they can work quite well.
2.) Metabolic enhancers - the so called "no work" pill. These force your body to burn more calories by increasing bloodflow, energy level, and other physical traits. These can be very dangerous! Increased blood flow can lead to any or all of the following side effects: trouble breathing, high blood pressure, dizziness, increased risk of heart failure, or increased risk of aneurisms.
3.) Intake blockers - these are the newest type of diet pill, when taken during or just before a meal, they block your body's intake of sugar, fat, or other unhealthy substances. Normally they do so by coating these substances with an undigestable substance in your stomach before they can be digested. They then pass through your body and are expelled with other waste products. Depending on your fat or sugar intake they can be quite effective. If you eat a large number of fatty foods they may work for you.
Each has it's drawbacks, one may lead to starvation dieting, one to chemical dependance and health problems, and one will be largely ineffective unless you eat a large amount of the substance you are blocking in your diet anyway. Your best bet is to speak to a doctor about what type to take, what dosage, and follow their instructions. I hope you find what you needed.
