When would a doctor prescribe diet pills?

Question:
Last year I managed to lose 40lbs through willpower and absolutely starving myself whilst exercising almost obsessively. I did feel fantastic though. I then decided to give up smoking and have now put on all the weight again. I have been following the exact same diet plan that I followed last year and have only shifted a couple of pounds. I don't understand the problem and want to ask my doctor for diet pills in order to get me kick-started again. I know I'm fat enough but don't know what else he will ask and am very keen to get them.

What will he ask and what should I say?

Answer:
Do NOT take diet pills! They are dangerous!!

Last year I was visiting my parents and took diet pills on top on my exercise routine and normal diet. I was 26 at the time, 5'11, 180 lbs. By week three I was sick. I had diarrhea, dry heaves, dizziness, headaches, and a general feeling of being sick. I thought I had caught the flu or something. I had lost 13 lbs in 4 days. One morning I told my mom I didn't feel good. My vision kept blacking out and I felt (for lack of a better way to say it) stoned. Later that afternoon I was walking from the bathroom to my bedroom (a 5 foot walk) and I passed out. I was rushed to the hospital emergency where they did a bunch of tests on me.

My pulse was up to 120, My blood pressure was 150/40, they had to start me on an IV, the did an EKG on me, took blood and urine samples, and a whole barrage of other tests.

They finally got me stabilized and said that I was dehydrated and malnutritioned. I told him that I took diet pills. When I mentioned diet pill, the doctors face lit up and said that's why. He said they can cause a whole bunch of health problems, including death. He told me to toss the diet pills or next time I might not be so lucky.

I was kept in the hospital for almost 10 hours, given 3 or 4 IVs, potassium, juices, and monitored (by the EKG, blood pressure, and heart rate machines) every 15 minutes.

Please take my story as a warning. If you seriously want to loose weight there are better ways (I know because I've lost weight after this)

The quickest way to lose weight is to cut out red meats, starches, breads, sugars, alcohol, and sodas.

Eat veggies (salads are good), soups, and drink TONS of water. If you get hungry between a meal, drink water to fill up.

In moderation eat white meats, and fruits (fruits contain natural sugars, and that can put on weight)

Practice portion control. Yes, you'll feel hungry at first, but think of your goal, and soon your stomach will start shrinking and you won't have that feeling anymore.

Eat 5 times a day. A small breakfast. A mid-morning snack, such as an apple. A small lunch. A mid-afternoon snack, such as carrots. A lite dinner. Do not eat any later than 7pm (6pm is better.)

Go exercise for at least an hour - two a day, incorporating weight training along with your cardio. Cardio helps to melt the fat, while weight training builds muscle. Muscle burns fat, even when you are resting. You get the idea. It also gives tone and definition. Also do a few yoga and pilates exercises to help tone those hard to reach and stubborn areas.
It should really depend on your BMI - I don't know how high it needs to be, but that should definitely be something that should make him give them to you.
my doctor told me to clear off untill i was 3 stone over weight
Quick way to lose weight, cut out crap like chocolate and crisps, eat less, exercise more, drink more water especially before meals as this will make you feel full.
Dieting DOES NOT work, it has to be a change FOREVER in your life regarding diet and exercise.
Starving is not a good way to lose weight as it can be extremely harmful to your body. Eat better eat less work more.
Diet pills are a cop out
If you live in the UK then you have to have a BMI of 30 or over and proof that you have tried several diets without success then they will prescribe them. I was in the same position, tried diets and they didn't work but my doctor asked me to try one last one, the Atkins Diet, if that didn't work by the end of the month he said he'd prescribe the pills, strangely enough i managed to shift 2 stone in 2 months. Stick with the dieting the pills are apparently nasty and have awful side effects.
If your B.M is over 25 it is high . Mine is 33.9 and I cant get any pills. If you are in Uk Boots do a B.M readout on their scales. My other half weighs over the Doctors scale (over 150K) and he has been given pills as he has existing problems.
Many doctors will rarely use them others are so poor in their prescribing habits they will give patients almost anything they ask for for a quiet life.

Unfortunately the evidence is now fairly conclusive that neither diets nor diet pills result in sustained weight loss, in fact 2 in 3 dieters will be HEAVIER in the long term.

It appears to stand any chance you have to get off the couch and add regular vigorous exercise, or statistically you will fail. This is because though we are what we eat, we are even more what we don't do!
You know I would go to http://wharris1.qhealthzone.com/... and look at the XS it is what I use for my energy and I have lost 33 lbs since this April and I have so much energy I don't want the day to end and I can really afford to stay with it. Where other things are sooo expensive you give up... It even taste wonderful I personally like Cran-Grape one it taste just like grape soda with no harmful things in it. The vit B-12 in it is 4900% which if you remember in the old days was how woman lost all their weight with a B-12 shot daily. Ok I wish you luck and hope you do great alo use a free site called www.fitday.com
Sorry i cant answer your question but i do look forward to hearing if anyone can as i am having the same problem. I stopped smoking almost 6 months ago and am finding it
virtually impossible to shift the extra weight.

look forward to hearing of a solution!!
I think you're half way to getting your own answer - "Actually thinking something is wrong with my metabolism". There may not actually be anything wrong with your metabolism but the food you are eating is likely to be unsuitable for your metabolic type.

There are a number of different metabolic types and they key to getting the weight off and keeping it off is finding out what type you are and eating the foods suitable for your type.

You can find out more about metabolic typing by searching online for the term. There are a number of websites that will test you by filling in an online questionnarie, about $20/£10 and will give you a good list of foods to eat and avoid.

Or you can buy the book which is even better and cheaper!
it's available on amazon relatively cheaply -

Good luck, it certainly seems you are determined to get healthy!

PS. Yr DR is unlikely to give diet pills until after observing you dieting, and will want to give you a thorough check up, you won't get them if you have even a slightly above normal blood pressure!
maybe your metabolism is low or it could be that your thyroid gland isnt working correctly, due to too many toxins in the body (junk food, processed food, take-away, too much sugar, E-numbers in processed foods, fizzy drinks, the list goes on). the thyroid gland controls your bodys metabolism (this helps to brak down carbs so they dont turn into fat which is hard to shift-i know from experience), if its over active you generally find that you dont put on much weight if any at all, but if your thyroid gland is under-active then you should go to your doctor and he/she will give you something to help that. alternativley, go to holland & barretts and the can give you some herbal tablets that help, the worked for me. kelp tablets. ideally, you should lose 2lb a week if you exercise regularly, my mum is the arobics instrctor and dietition..i hate it. lol. try the kelp, started it last week and ive gone from 11st 4lb to 11st 2lb. you can only try. good luck
when your over weight or eat very unhealthy.
Hi ther ok im a male aged 24 and i currently weigh 20 stone. I have had numerous tablets from the doctor and they are very easy to get if you know the right thing to say. There are 2 main types of tablets you can get from the Doctor. I have provided the links below which explain them in more detail. In order to get these tablets you have to make an appointment and specifically ask for them. One type of tablet is called Orlistat which come in blue capsules and the other type is reductine tablets. The orlistat reduces 70% of the fat intake and comes straight out the other end. Reductine controls your appetite. You cannot buy these over the counter. Doctors are very reluctant to give these out as they are very expensive to make and they dont like the fact that some people may think these are miracle pills. Ok here is how you get them. You could try Orlistat first. You phone and make an appointment with your GP. Now this part is very important and it will determine wether or not you get them. weigh yourself before you go to the doctor and say for instance you were 13 stone, when you go to the doctor tell him.her that you have been trying very hard on your diet, you have been exercising on a regular basis too and you have lost a stone (i.e. tell the Doctor you were 14 stone a fortnigt ago and you think you have lost a stone) The Doctor will then weigh you to confrirm that you are now only 13 stone, which you were anyway but it makes it look as though you have lost weight. I learned from my experience so please take heed to my advice. The reason you tell the doctor this is because they will not prescribe them to you if you have not lost any weight as they want to see that you are serious about losing weight. You also have to say to the doctor that you are doing good but at times you still feel very hungry. Pretend to the doctor that you know someone whi is taking either reductine or orlistat and say that it has done them the world of good anfd they have reached their target weight. Explain to the doctoe that you would like to try these out, you know that the are not a miracle tablet and you have to make your own effort but you feel as though this will encourage you to remain on your diet. I guarantee that yu will def get them. I get them all the time and i have advised friends, family and work colleagues to do the same and have all got them. It is important that you dont say diet pills but instead you mention the exact name. That way the doctor knows that you know that you can get them on prescription and repeat too. I guarantee if you say the above you will get them. If you do however get challenged by the doctor and he refuses to give you them then you say why not, my friend is nowhere near as fat as me and she got them. Tell the doctor to give you a chance and you will go back in a month or 2 to show him you are losing weight. Good luck.
