What kind of diet pill can I take with hypothyroidism?

Question:
I was just wondering if anyone know's what kind of diet pill I could take? I am on levethyroid, but I still have trouble losing weight. Does some one know what I could take that would be safe to take with my Thyroid Meds?

Answer:
Stay away from diet pills. If you want to take supplements try fiber, zinc, ltryosine, selenium, digestive enzymes, and raw apple cider vinegar before dinner. Really though you should get your thyroid set first, as this is the main cause for difficulty losing weight. Doctors either have us undermedicated or on the wrong medication.

Always test thyroid in the morning. You are on T4, so you would want your morning TSH to be around 1.0 for relief of symptoms and optimal for weight loss. You do need to exercise and watch food intake. I exercise at least an average of 1 hour a day, usually with walking.

If you stil have symptoms of low thyroid after getting the TSH to a 1.0, then its time to look into a T4/T3 medication like Armour. That's what I'm on. It is adjusted by the free t4 and free t3, not by TSH. Basically you want a above midrange FT4 and a high in range FT3.

I wouldn't take diet pills. They are bad news and you can easily become dependent on them. Also, if this is your condition, you should talk to your endocrinologist. I have a friend who drinks certain shakes that help her with the whole eating/wait thing that accompanies hypothyroidism. If you have been on levelthyroid for a while, it is possible that you could need a higher dose or a new medication.

But go to your doctor, I am just a med student, not a doctor ...

Diet pills fall into two categories:
1) Ones that don't work
2) Ones that work, but destroy your vital organs AND eventhough they help you lose weight temporarily, they force your body to gain it back with interest in the long term.
Since you're hypothyroid, you'll mess up your metablolism even worse than other poeple.

So go on a low glycemic diet instead and you'll lose weight. Ask your doctor to let you know. Weght watchers has this option. You can lose weight, without damaging yourself and endangering your future health.

I too have Hypothyroidism and I wouldn't think about taking pills. The pills drive your metabolism up making your meds (Synthroid or Levothyroxine) all out of wack. Birth Control can do the same thing.

Your best bet is a Multi-Vitamin and start exercising. Try walking to start.
