The disadvantages:

1) you rely on them
2) it can increase your appetite and make you gain weight once you stop taking them
3) like some have said, it messes w/your body
4) costly and a waste of money
none. they have good and bad effects. Exercises is better
i used to take diet pills, now i regret it. i think they messed up my body because i am no longer able to have a bowel movement the same and i have stomach pain and this all started when i started taking the diet pills. you dont need to take them you need to eat healthy and exercise. good luck!
I second Cherry-o's response, and add that some have been known to cause serious long term health problems, as well as death.

Terry Schiavo's condition was said to have been due to taking diet pills. You remember she was the one in the est. 15 year long coma, whose family was fighting over whether to remove her feeding tube and allow her to die. It turned out that her brain was no longer(how shall I say this?) in its original state, and clearly could not have been functioning for a very long time.

I do not want to see you in a coma with a feeding tube as a result of a foolish choice made for vanity. Please do not take diet pills.
Most diet pills stop you from eating.When you don't continuously feed your body at regular intervals it goes into starvation mode.Now your body has a propensity to store all calories as fat and it will eat its own muscle to survive. Diarrhea, Insomnia, Death, etc. You don't need a stupid pill to lose the flab. Weight loss is simple - calories in, calories out. You have to pay attention to what you're taking in. All the successful "diets" have one thing in common - the dieter keeps a record. All my patients who come to me for weight loss say the same thing - "I don't eat that much". But the fact is, they have no idea how much they eat. If you don't know how many calories you're eating your unlikely to be successful. Exercise helps, but it is more important for overall fitness than dropping pounds. You wanna lose weight, eat less. You wanna get fit, exercise.
None really work. Read the labels...they ALL say the same thing. Something along the lines of "if you take this pill with a calorie-reduced diet and regular exercise, you MAY lose weight." Even the so-called natural ones carry dangers with them that are not worth it, including Hoodia.

There's only one safe way to lose weight effectively, and that is to eat a LITTLE less (by 200-400 calories) than the amount of calories you need to use in a day. If you eat too much less, you body goes into fat storage mode, and your attempts at starving yourself will backfire, as you will get fat quickly again when you start eating again.
