Does anyone know if diet pills work?

Question:

Answer:
You might want to think twice about using an appetite suppressant to quickly shed a few pounds from your widening waist or fatty thighs. A recent study has found that a key ingredient (PPA )in over-the-counter diet pills can increase the risk of stroke in women.

Two "ephedra-free" over-the-counter dietary supplements containing bitter orange extract could pose health dangers of their own, a new study suggests.

Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco, tested two products, Advantra Z and Xenadrine EFX, and found they increased the heart rates of healthy adult users by an average of 11 to 16 beats per minute -- an 18 percent jump over the normal 80 beats per minute.

In addition, Xenadrine EFX, which also contains high doses of caffeine, increased blood pressure by 7 to 12 percent (between 9-10 mm Hg), the researchers reported in the September issue of the American Journal of Medicine.

And another to bear in mind is, that many women who take these pills soon pile on the weight yet again. It is a vicious cycle, far better for you to take control of what you eat rather than the dangers of the pill..
I personally love NV. I lost 10 lbs since I have started. It really slows down your appetite!!.
This is a Great Question to get out there, Yes SOME diet pills work for SOME people but you have to use common sense and restrain, it is not a perfert 10 body in a bottle, Good luck to you make sure you read EVERYTHING that is in the pills to make sure you're not allergic or anything
For most people yes, there can be side effects and it will depend on your general health.

They are appetite suppressants, and some have similar properties to speed.
I don't think there are any 'fixes' that work permanently. At best they can give you a short term weight loss by surpressing your appetite. However, as soon as you start eating 'normally' again, you will put it all back on, and more.

These pills can have dangerous side effects as well.

The only sure fire way to lose weight is to use more calories than you put in, ie reduce your calorie intake and do more exercise, it's as simple as that!
Some do work, Ive tried a few types, however, they are supposed to slow dowm your appetite but I eat for the hell of eating, not just when i'm hungry! So if you have more willpower than me, they may just work. Have a look in the nutricentre in Tesco, they have a great variety of diet pills and shakes etc.
In the short term, yes. With side effects like headaches, weakness, sleep disorders etc.

If you're feeling that hopeless that you have to resort to diet pills, you need therapy or more help than a diet pill can give you. They work for emergencies but everyone I know who has used diet pills has rebounded back to normal weight and then some.

There are smart fixes, but no quick fixes. Get a friend and a pedometer, particularly one that tracks a week's worth of steps. Walk 13,000-16,000 steps in a day and eat anything you like, you will still lose weight. 10,000 should balance you out with just sensible portion control (try to tell yourself to earn your meals by getting say 3000 steps before or right after each meal)

Walking with a friend racks up the steps-per-day and has no side-effects (as long as you have decent shoes) and you burn off calories without monotonous workouts.

I know several people who have battled obesity, and not even ONE of them won the war with diet pills. The most successful ones first got control of their own thoughts and began the fight by becoming happier and more calm before they started beating back the pounds.

Avoid diet pills. The typical rebound period is 3 years to get back to the original weight, and studies (see medical journals) suggest that the weight gain continues for two years more.

Warning: Now if you're not considered obese and you are the only one who thinks you need to lose weight and take diet pills, please see a doctor immediately.
No they dont.

What works is:-

More exercise incorporated into your day - get off bus stop early - walk instead of driving - use stairs/walk up esculators, etc. Get a bike and cycle to places.

Eat more fruit and veg - fill up on it

Reduce/remove processed food and cook from fresh wherever possible.

Choose low fat options day to day but don't obssess about it.

Drinks loads of water and before every meal to fill you out.

If you do all this weight will gradually go and you will reach a natural weight that is healthy and right for you.
Some pills do, but not all do for all people. They work by suppressing the appetite and thus you lose weight. BUT THEY ARE NOT GOOD FOR YOUR LONG TERM HEALTH AND SHOULD ONLY BE USED IN ABNORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES. They should not be used by anyone who just wants to shed a little bit of weight. The best way is just to eat relatively healthily and EXCERCISE!
In a recent paper, from University of California, they did a meta-analysis of all the work on weight loss over the past few years. ( summary) It showed that 2/3 of people who diet yo-yo to a higher weight, none of the faddy diets of diet pills work and that rapid weight loss doubles heart attack risk!

They seemed to suggest the only hope was modest calorie reduction + EXERCISE.

I have to admit I have a 'stock' answer for this question, since if you look it appears 20-30 times every day!

Type 'guaranteed weight loss' into google, you will find 1 1/2 million sites!

Look around you if ANY of these things worked would we be getting so overweight?

We are what we eat, but we are at least as much what we don't do. Calorie intakes in 1900 and 1950 were higher than they are now, we just don't use them up!

Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg.

Take a healthy amount of exercise 30-40 minutes of vigorous exercise per day 4-5 days a week. I hate to think what percentage of the UK population does that 2%? 5%?

I have seen hundreds of questions with this same pattern :- I am fat, tell me where on line I can get this super diet or herbal/dangerous/illegal drug that I hear will fix it for me in 10 minutes without the need for me to get off the couch!

No fixes pal , less in more out, its the only way.
