Why does the sound of connecting to dial up internet or sending faxes make that sound?

Question:

Answer:
When the modem is first making the connection it is sending digital signals which are being translated into audible noises. The higher pitched sound is one digit, the lower sound is a zero. The computer at the other end receives the audio signal, and converts them back to digital signal.

Hence the word MODEM - it MOdulates and DEModulates
Because of a speaker
That is how the computers "talk" to each other to establish the connection.
