How can I modify or edit a font to use in a rough draft to make a business card?

Question:
There is a font that is almost what I need for my business logo, but I would like to modify it. What program do I need or how do I do this?
Paint.
Fontographer and FontCreator, among others, are able to create and edit fonts. But you might not needed them, especially if you only wanto to modify few fonts. So it resorts to vector applications, where you can turn the text into a drawing object (shape). In Adobe Illustrator, you "convert text into outline"; In Freehand, "convert text into path"; while in CorelDraw, "turn text into curves". They are all the same. After applying this, you can treat as a drawing object (shape).

If you use Photoshop, you can do one of these:
1. Rasterize your text.
2. Load selection marquee after your text, and save it as channel.
3. Make a path based on your text (or marquee, or channel) by creating a new path in Paths palette.

Then you modify them.
