If you are using windows as your operating system I would check out cardscan. It seems to be compact and you can carry it with with a laptop or to trade shows and you do not need a power cord just a usb connection.

It also works with Outlook, Palm, Act, Goldmine so pretty much any type of software you can think of.

The seem to have a pretty good reputation in the market.
